How to Measure Your Resting Heart Rate
Your resting heart rate (RHR) is the number of times your heart beats per minute when you’re completely at rest — usually measured after waking up, before getting out of bed.
To check it manually, sit or lie quietly for at least 5 minutes, then place your index and middle fingers on your wrist (radial pulse) or neck (carotid pulse). Count the number of beats you feel in 60 seconds — that’s your RHR.
Here’s how to measure it accurately:
Choose the right time:
Measure first thing in the morning, before getting out of bed, or after sitting quietly for at least 5 minutes.Find your pulse:
Use your index and middle fingers (not your thumb).
Place them on your radial artery (just below your thumb on the wrist) or on your neck beside your windpipe (carotid artery).
Count your beats:
Count the number of beats for 30 seconds.
Multiply by 2 to get beats per minute (bpm).
(Or count for a full 60 seconds for maximum accuracy.)
Record the result:
Normal RHR for most healthy adults is 60–80 bpm.
Well-trained individuals may have values as low as 40–60 bpm.
Higher readings (above 90 bpm) may suggest stress, dehydration, fatigue, or lower fitness levels.
Tip:
For the best average, take your RHR for 3 consecutive mornings and use the lowest consistent value.
If you have a fitness tracker or smartwatch, it likely records your RHR automatically throughout the night or during rest periods. Just check your app for the average daily resting value — this is usually the most accurate reading.
